DECEMBER 2007 ART EXHIBIT

The Library is pleased to host the Boston College Burns Library traveling exhibit, “I am of Ireland (1970-2004),” photographs by James U. Cryan.

James Cryan brings a lifelong love of the Irish and their homeland to his photography.  From his earliest days, he listened to his grandparents’ poignant stories of the land they left and the people they would never see again.

In his senior year at Merrimack College, James began to immerse himself in Irish history and literature.  Drafted into the Army immediately after graduation, he purchased his first camera in Vietnam, where he recorded the war from his perspective.  After his discharge, he made his first trip to Ireland and happily discovered his grandfather’s ninety-one year-old brother still living there.

James has made seven photographic pilgrimages to Ireland over the past 35 years and has compiled an extensive sampling of images of the people, the land, its antiquities and monuments.  Last year he selected his favorites for a special exhibit at Boston College’s Burns Library.  With permission of the Burns Library, these images from the James Cryan Gallery Collection have become a traveling exhibit.

James lives and works in Pelham with his wife Elizabeth.  For more information about James Cryan and his photographs, contact him at:
